Saturday 12th September is St Eanswythe’s Day. St Eanswythe was an Anglo-Saxon princess of Kent and later, Folkestone’s patron saint. To celebrate her day, and to celebrate an extension of the museum’s fabulous Anglo-Saxon exhibition until October 24th, come along to the “Make It” workshop and make your very own Anglo-Saxon battle helmet!
The best known early medieval helmet is the one found at Sutton Hoo. Archaeologists thought that this helmet probably came from Scandinavia. A die stamp found in North Kent, however, may suggest that Kentish craftspeople made the helmet. The King of Kent often gave jewellery as gifts. You can see some more examples of Kentish jewellery in our exhibition.
Our drop-in workshops run from 10:30-12:30 and 1:30-3:30pm. We recommend giving yourself at least 30 minutes to complete the activity. Workshops are free but, if you can, a small donation towards materials is welcome. The workshop is suitable for children aged 7+ but activities for younger visitors are also available.
