Join us at Folkestone Museum for an evening all about Fashionable Folkestone. Folkestone changed hugely during the Victorian period. As soon as the railway arrived in town in 1842, visitors flocked to the town, which became the place to be.
Folkestone expanded rapidly to the west – thanks to the Earl of Radnor, who had the Leas Promenade and new housing created. Hotels sprung up for wealthy visitors. Folkestone Harbour changed owner, got its own train station, and from it, its passenger link to France. Folkestone Museum was founded at this time too!
Local historian Vince Williams will give a talk all about Folkestone’s Pleasure Gardens. His new book will be available to buy on the night. Vince will be with us all evening to answer your questions. There’s only 34 tickets for his talk – grab one before they run out!
If you don’t fancy our talk, you can still enjoy the museum with a glass of wine! Get hands-on with some Victorian craft, try some dressing up, play some Victorian toys and games, and try the Curator’s quiz.
Fashionable Folkestone is an event for over 18s. Tickets cost £8 for general admission plus talk, and £5 for general admission. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available on the night!
